How much to tip cruise staff

Auto-gratuity covers most of it

On most US sailings, plan on the automatic daily gratuity already on the folio (often about $14–$18 per guest per night). Extra cash is for exceptional cabin or specialty service.

Do not tip the same person twice for the same nights. Envelopes are for people who went beyond the pool.

US customHow we got this range

Dollar ranges

BandWhat to bring
TypicalPrepaid auto-gratuity only. Optional $20–$50 total extra for a standout steward on a week-long sailing.
GenerousLarger envelopes for a butler, suite team, or specialty dining that felt private-hire.
Skip$0 extra when auto-gratuity is on and service was ordinary — or when the line forbids additional tips.

Edge cases

You removed auto-gratuity

Then you owe the customary daily pool in cash or a re-added charge. Ask guest services how the line wants it split.

Specialty restaurants and spa

Some venues add their own service charge. Read the check before stacking another 20%.

Beverage packages

A drink package is not a tip. Bartenders may still have an auto line or a jar — follow what the folio already charged.

Where this applies

United States–market lines (default)

Automatic daily gratuities are the norm. The ~$16/guest/night figure in the calculator is a starting compile, not every line’s exact post.

Luxury and expedition

Some fares include gratuities. Read the contract; the calculator should read $0 extra when that is the deal.

Non-US embarkations

Follow the line’s posted policy for that ship and market. Do not import a US envelope habit blindly.

Questions people actually ask

How much do you tip on a cruise?
Most US lines already charge about $14–$18 per guest per night. Extra cash is optional for exceptional service.
Should you tip if gratuities are automatic?
Usually no extra is required. Leave envelopes only for people who clearly went beyond the automatic pool.
Do you tip the cabin steward separately?
Only if you want to thank them on top of auto-gratuity. They already share in the daily charge on most lines.
What if I prepaid gratuities?
That is the tip. The calculator should read $0 extra unless you choose an optional cash pool.
