How much to tip a massage therapist

15 to 20% of the session

In the US, plan on 15 to 20% of what you paid for the massage. 20% is the solid default for an independent therapist.

Cash to the therapist at the end, unless the spa ticket already included gratuity.

What to hand over
Normal

15 to 20% of the session price. 20% is usual for an independent or outcall.

Generous

25% for a hard medical or deep-tissue hour, or a holiday-week booking they protected for you.

Nothing — $0

$0 when the spa ticket includes gratuity, tips are pooled and the house says not to add cash, or the therapist cannot accept it.

When it's different

Spa vs independent

A spa may include or pool gratuity. Read the intake form. An independent therapist usually takes cash at the end.

Membership or prepaid package

Tip on the session value they actually gave you, not on the discounted package unit if that would starve the percent. When unsure, 20% of today’s sticker is honest.

Medical or insurance massage

If it billed as clinical and the office forbids gratuity, $0. If they still take cash, treat it like any other session.

Where you are

United States (default)

Tipping a massage therapist is customary in the US. These ranges are compiled custom, not a wage survey.

High-cost cities

When the session already costs more, 20% is just normal, not a stretch.

Outside the US

In much of Europe a spa bill is not a tipped session. In Japan, do not tip. Follow local practice.

Common questions

How much do you tip a massage therapist?

Plan on 15 to 20% of the session in the US. 20% is a solid default. If gratuity is on the ticket, do not add another 20%.

Do you tip at a spa?

Only if the house allows it and it is not already included. Many spas pool tips; cash in an envelope is the backup when they say it reaches the therapist.

Do you tip on the membership price or the full rate?

Tip on the value of today’s session. If the membership rate is the real price you paid, use that. Do not invent a higher sticker to inflate the tip.

Cash or on the card?

Cash at the end reaches the therapist. A line on the spa ticket is fine when that is how they pay out.
