How much to tip an Uber driver

15–20% of the fare

In the US, plan on 15–20% of the Uber fare. 20% is the solid default; add a bit for airports or a long wait.

Use the in-app tip unless they ask for cash. Do not tip twice.

US customHow we got this range

Dollar ranges

BandWhat to bring
Typical15–20% of the fare. $3–$5 minimum on a very short trip so the percent does not collapse to coins.
Generous25% for a messy airport, heavy bags, a car seat, or a wait they sat through.
Skip$0 extra if you already tipped in the app, the trip was cancelled on you, or the driver was hostile.

Edge cases

Already tapped 20% in the app

That is the tip. Do not add cash on top unless they handled something well beyond the ride.

Airport

Airport pickup or drop-off is the same percent plus about $5 in this formula, or just pick 20–25% in the app. Do not stack both blindly.

Shared or pooled fares

Tip on your fare, not the whole car. If the product prepaid a tip, the calculator should read $0.

Where this applies

United States (default)

Tipping Uber drivers is customary in the US. These ranges are compiled custom, not Uber’s own policy.

High-cost cities

20% is typical. Airport surcharges on the fare are not a substitute for the tip.

Outside the US

In some countries rideshare is not a tipped job. Follow local practice; this page is the American custom.

Questions people actually ask

How much do you tip an Uber driver?
Plan on 15–20% of the fare. 20% is a solid default. Airport runs and long waits sit on the generous side.
Do you tip Uber in the app or in cash?
In the app is the default. Cash is fine if they prefer it — not both.
Do you tip more for Uber to the airport?
Often yes. This page adds $5 for an airport pickup or drop-off on top of the percent, or you can just choose 20–25% in the app.
What if the driver was late or rude?
You do not owe a generous tip. 0–10% is honest for hostility. A late pickup from traffic is not the same as a rude ride.
